For grammar school, she went to Montgomery Industrial School, but the students called it Miss White's school. Miss White was one of the founder and the principal. She was a white woman from the North who wanted to teach int he South. She believed that all Americans should have a good education.
When Rosa was in 9th grade, Miss White's school closed. Rosa stayed in Montgomery and went to a black public junior high school. Then she went to the only black high school around. It was run by the Alabama State Teachers' College. When she got to the 11th grade, her grandmother and then her mother became sick. She had to quit to take care of them. She did eventually graduate.
