What should people do in an earthquake?

If you are in an earthquake:

• If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under a heavy table or desk, or in an interior hallway where you can brace yourself between two walls. Doorways are among the safest places to stand, thanks to the strong beams overhead. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.
• If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.
• If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down, with your hands protecting your head and neck.
• If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking has subsided.
• Be sure to put on shoes immediately, to avoid injury from stepping on broken glass and objects.
• Check yourself and others for injuries.
• Check for gas and water leaks and damage to electrical wires. Only turn off gas lines if there is damage; it may take a while for technicians to get to your area to turn gas and power back on.
• Do not create a naked flame or spark.
• Survey the exterior of your home for structural damage to the chimney, roof, foundation and walls.
• Do NOT use your automobile unless there is an emergency.
• If you must leave the area, try to leave word where you can be contacted.
• If you live by water (sea or lake) be aware that the earthquake may have caused a tidal wave, so get to higher ground and stay there as soon as you can.

REMEMBER that there may be aftershocks, which can also cause great damage to your surroundings. Be prepared!

If your at school, you get under your desk. Hold one hand on your hand and the other on the table leg.

If your at home, go outside, that's the safest thing to do.

u duck and cover under a table and if u are out side then go to a place where there is no wires, trees, or buildings. the best place to go is to go to a field!! but if u are in a car, if u cannot move then stay inside the car. but if u can move the car then go to a open space!!

If you are indoors, get yourself under a stable part of the structure, such as a doorframe or under a large table or other such object. If you are outdoors, remain in open ground away from any trees and buildings, and don't return indoors until well after the initial tremors have ceased. There is a email that said to go to a place (in or outdoors are all good) and if you lay down and protect your neck you will get saved from the things that fall off the desk or thing.After you lay there,there is a triangle that protects you.

According to the USGS Earthquake Center:

1. If you are INDOORS--STAY THERE! (Get under a desk or table and hang on to it, or move into a hallway or get against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. GET OUT of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place (things can fall on you). DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the bldg is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.
2. If you are OUTSIDE-- get into the OPEN, away from bldgs, power lines, chimneys, and anything else that might fall on you.
3. If you are DRIVING--stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.
4. If you are in a MOUNTAINOUS AREA--watch out for falling rock, landslides, trees, and other debris that could be loosened by equipments.

Earthquake safety is also very important. Some precautions you should have is when the ground starts shaking then you should take cover put your head on the floor and cover it with your hands. Also, you should stay indoors until the shaking

doesn't

stop so there is an easier way to exit. You should stay away from bookshelves or any kind of furniture so there is a chance it may fall on you. Make sure that you stay away from windows and high buildings if the intensity is high there is a chance it may fall on.

If you're indoors, immediately upon sensing the earthquake move away from windows and heavy furniture and get to a doorway as soon as possible; alternatively get under a sturdy desk and hang on because the shaking can be violent and often involves movement that is side to side, up and down and often all at once. Shield your eyes from falling debris and face away from windows that can explode; cover the back of your neck with your other hand to prevent spinal injuries from falling objects.

If you're outside, move away from large buildings and lie flat on the ground away from power lines, bridges and tall trees with your hands over your head covering it from debris. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible staying away from bridges, overpasses and tall buildings. Stay in your car.

Once the shaking has stopped DO NOT run out of the building as debris can be still falling its better to wait and leave when it is safe. If youre outdoors stay away from buildings in case of aftershocks. If youre driving go extremely slowly as the quake may have damaged roadways.
