I would evaluate that person's qualifications and motivation for making that statement. If they were qualified, in other words, had some education , background, and active involvement in track, and if their motivation seemed to be to help, not hurt, then I would consider taking their advise. I would in fact ask them if there was another distance, or perhaps a field event, that they thought I would enjoy and perhaps excel in. If they were not qualified, and perhaps had said other hurtful things to me or other people, then I would ignore them, and continue to do whatever Track and Field activity I enjoyed, win or lose.
