It sounds as if you may have the timing adjusted wrong. The car should idle at 850 rpm I believe. If you adjust the idle the car should use less gas.
That is about your average idle RPM. It depends on what car you have and the age of your car. If it bothers you, i'd recommend going to a place that fixes cars.
My olds alero with the 2.2 liter ecotec rests at around 950-1000 rpm.
If you are looking to max your gas mileage, shift earlier like around 2500-2800 rpm. To make your car sound cool, I shift at 4000 rpm, but it will use more fuel
your car's idle rpm is set too low, it should be over 750 rpm at warm idle
About 2300 to 2450 RPM (In that range) At 70 it should be around 2100 RPM.
