West Virginia was originally part of the State of Virginia. After Virginia seceded and joined the Confederacy, West Virginia seceded from Virginia and joined the Union as a new State.

They surrendered in Appomatox, Virginia in 1865. The generals were Robert E. lee for the south, and Ulysses S. Grant for the north.
The Army of Northern Virginia was the principal Confederate army in the Eastern theatre. It was led by Robert E. Lee after the serious wounding and hospitalising of Joseph E. Johnston.
Army of Northern Virginia
During the US Civil War, Virginia was home to many battles. In the eastern Theater, Virginia, each side had an army that dominated military operations there. For the South it was the Army of Northern Virginia, and for the North it was the Army of the Potomac.

Once Lee took command, the Army of Northern Virginia became a force to be reckoned with.
The south named its armies for the Department in which they operated. The entire south was divided into military departments, with a commander in each, who was also commander of the army troops in his Department. Thus, Lee commanded the Department of Northern Virginia (which was Virginia north of the James River) and so his army was the Army of Northern Virginia. The other main Rebel Army was the Army of Tennessee, from the Department of Tennessee. The north named its armies after rivers, so there was the Army of the Potomac, the Army of the Ohio, The Army of the Cumberland, the Army of the James, the Army of the Tennessee, and so on.
Not the whole of it. Their job in Virginia was to try to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia. It took them four long years.
By separating its army into different sections, so that the enemy would not know where they were.

Lee commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
In 1862 the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, pitted the Army of Northern Virginia against the Army of the Potomac. General Robert E. Lee commanded the former army and General Ambrose Burnside commanded the latter army. As it turned out, it was a rushing defeat for the North and it premier army, the Army of the Potomac.
