Sorry, please forgive me, but though the above answer is correct, I must add:
Red poppies began to grow on the bomb blasted battlefields of the First World War. They were adopted as a symbol of the waste and futility of war. Poppies are sold by various charities to help and aid veterans of WW1 (which no one is living today) and WW2 and all other wars that Britain and her Commonwealth countries are, or have been, involved in. To wear a red poppy is to commemorate that we are alive because they, the fallen and maimed, sacrificed their youth so we could live our lives in freedom.
Because people think it is a sign of peace. Also, the poppy commemorates those who have died in war.

According to an American Legion Auxiliary Hangout……………………… "The American Legion Auxiliary was the first organization to adopt the Poppy as a Memorial Flower. This took place at a National Convention in Kansas City Missouri in October, 1921. The Poppy was picked as our memorial flower because it was in full bloom on the battlefield of France in the spring of 1919, where so many of the World War I service men died in battle to save our country. The true meaning of the Poppy is an emblem of faith to those who gave their lives for the security of this nation, and by giving aid to those vererans and their families who are in need by wearing a Memorial Poppy"
