Needs to be checked out and verified by a gunsmith.
There are numerous handguns that will fire more than one caliber or type of ammo. The Taurus Judge will fire .410 shotgun ammo or .45 Colt ammo. Smith and Wesson has just started producing a gun similar revolver called the Governer that will fire .410, .45 Colt, or .45 ACP. You can fire .38 special in any gun that is chambered in .357 magnum (but not vice-versa) or .44 special in a gun chambered for .44 magnum (but not vice-versa). Also there are other types. There is a very rare revolver called the Medusa that will fire anything in the .38 or 9mm family, including 9mm Kurz (380), 9x19mm, 38 special, and .357 magnum.
I own oneof these guns and the .45 acp ammo works perfectly in it. The only thing i can think of is a bad barrel. The good thing about these guns is that the barrel is interchangeable with a colt standard 1911.
what size ammo does a 32 owlhead use .32 Short Colt centerfire I have used the 80 grain.
.32 S&W Long If that doesn't work you will need to compare the serial number and figure out the manufacturing year, there were minor variations depending on which decade it was made; and of course there are a handful with aftermarket modifications. But the 'police CTG' models should have no trouble using .32 S&W Long. It should also be interchangeable with other ammo of the same size such as: .32 Colt New Police .32 Colt Police Positive

At largest, about a foot.
You are correct, it was made in 1936 & it does take the .38 special cartridge. Size G16 style would be my guess.
Size
You have to be more specific. Looking at the "Magazine" or "clip" can give you a good idea on how much ammo a weapon can hold. Also the caliber size of the ammo is a factor to how much ammo is in a "Magazine/clip".
.32 Auto.
