The rough opening for any door or window less than 82.5 inches is two inches larger than the frame being placed in. If the door is larger than that, two and one half inches are added to the overall size.

For the width, add 1/8" between the door and frame, 3/4" for the frame, and 1/4" for shimming, to both sides. Total to add in the width 2-1/4" in the height, the dimension should be a minimum of 1-3/4" above the door height. This is due to the 1/8" gap over a hard surface floor, the height of the doors, the gap between the frame and door, the frame, and shimming space. Many interior jambs are not attached to the header, therefore the shimming space can vary. Make sure to set the height of the header from the finished floor height. If you set it from the rough floor height, you may have to cut the door down because it will not fit, and many doors made today are not recommended to be cut.
