The wire size depends on the amperage, not the voltage. The fact that the welder runs on 440 volts does not affect the wire size!

You need to ask this question instead:

What size wire do you need for a three phase welder on an eight foot run if the nameplate amps are 45A?

Would using a 200 foot extension cord which is 6 gauge 3 wire cord on a 220 single phase welder present any problems?

Absolutely, you will have voltage drop, maybe enough voltage drop that the welder will not work <<>> To do a voltage drop calculation for the 200 foot cable the input amperage of the welder needs to be stated. At a maximum distance of 201 feet and limiting the voltage drop to 3% or less, a #6 copper conductor can deliver 37 amps on a 220 volt system. Check the nameplate on the welder to see if it falls withing the range of 37 amps input amperage. Do not use the welders output amperage.

Would using a 60 foot extension cord which is 6 gauge 3 wire cord on a 220 volt single phase welder present any problems?

It shouldn't. Check the nameplate for input amperage of the machine. Your #6 wire is good for 60 amps. If the nameplate amperage is below 60 amps then you are good to go.

How many eight foot long 2 x 4's will you need to build a wall eight feet high and twelve feet long?

Okay, this requires a little simple math and some three dimensional thinking. For the fence (wall) planks alone, you will need 55 eight foot 2 x 4's. For a simple box frame you will need another 8. 55 + 8 = 63 The problem is, the fence (wall) will not be free standing. You'll need three twelve foot 4 x 4 posts (twelve foot long, because four feet of them will be set into the ground.
