Bread was an important staple in the diet of the pioneers. Baking is a time consuming activity. The baker did all of the baking, which allowed others to focus on other important daily living skills.
When I became a baker all I needed was a pulse and elementary school math skills. Today it is probably less because baking is done by factory, just add water, etc.
You will require number skills to ensure that you use the right amount of ingredients in the food you are baking.
