There are a number of species that mimic a rattlesnake by vibrating their tails. Corn snakes certainly do (some - but not all of my own corn snakes do this !)

Some species of nonvenomous snakes will vibrate their tails if they feel threatened. If they happen to be in dry leaves it sounds almost exactly like a rattlesnake.Rat snakes and gopher snakes are examples.

no it is not a type of defence, it is only used as a warning for the predator to go away. their type of defence is their teeth.

The rattle sound is a warning. The snake wouldn't shake the rattle (unless threatened), as it would warn prey that the snake was hunting.
