The only continuous member of the band is also the creator, Damon Albarn. He co-created Gorillaz with an animator named Jamie Hewlett who does all the illustrations. Since Albarn is the only consistent member of the band, they get collaborators to join in and help out with albums. So if you see them on tour, as I have, you will see animations in the background but the performers in the front. On their most recent tour with the album Plastic Beach, the performers included: Damon Albarn, Bootie Brown, Paul Simonon and Mick Jones (from the band The Clash), Little Dragon, Mos Def, Lou Reed, and a bunch of other artists.
