The Great Basin
Water in the Great Artesian Basin is replenished by rainfall which seeps down through the permeable sandstone aquifers. These aquifers are located primarily along the eastern edge of the Basin, which is the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range.
The Continental Divide in the United States runs along the Rocky Mountains, from northern Montana down to New Mexico. This geographic feature determines the direction of water flow, with rivers west of the divide eventually emptying into the Pacific Ocean, while those east of it flow towards the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico.
