It was to get all the Ares' kids to crowd around Percy and beat him up, while she and Luke took the flag.
Percy suprises everyone by beating Luke, who was "the best swordsman in 300 years" when it was his first time. He is able to do this because, even though it is not revealed til later on in the book, he is a son of Poseidon thus when watertouches him, it gives him special abilities.

Percy uses his wits and fighting skills to outsmart and outmaneuver Ares in combat. He uses his knowledge of ancient myths and gods to tap into his own inner power as a son of Poseidon, ultimately emerging victorious in their battle.

The ancient Greeks had numerous gods in their pantheion. They had also two gods of war. Ares (which the Romans called Mars) was the god of violence. He was irrational, he was impulsive, strong, furious and violent. The other god of war was Athene (which the Romans called Minerva). Athene was the god of military strategy, she was wise, tactical and able to beat Ares in their every battle, because Ares in his blind rage couldn't match up with Athenes strategic vision. The story of these gods taught to the Greeks that they should practise military strategy instead of going to battle in sheer furious rage. And that was the base of the Greek military success, they won their enemies with strategic advantage.
