There are three or four Canal Street Stations (two of the stations are connected to each other, so they can be considered to be one station).

In order from west to east, there is the Canal Street Station on the 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line), at Varick Street, the Canal Street Station on the A-C-E (the blue line), at 6th Avenue, and the Canal Street Station on the Nand R trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line), at Broadway, which is connected to the Canal Street Station on the 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) and the J-Z (the brown line), at Centre Street.

The 1 train runs up and down the West Side of Manhattan (and so do the 2 and 3, until 96th Street, and then they veer east and run up the middle of Manhattan). The Aand C also run up and down the West Side of Manhattan. The 4-5-6 runs up and down the East Side of Manhattan.

The N-R-Q-W line only runs up to 59th Street before heading east to Queens. The E train also heads east to Queens after the 50th Street stop. And the J-Z line runs only in Lower Manhattan.

So, you definitely won't be taking the J-Z. It only runs as far north as Delancey Street. If you are going no further uptown than 59th Street, then you can take the N or R. If you're going above 59th Street, then you'll want to take the 1 or the A or C if you are going to the West Side, and the 6 if you are going to the East Side.

If you're going to the West Side above 50th Street, then remember NOT to take the E, because after 50th Street the E veers east. It makes a few more stops in Manhattan, heading east (53rd Street-7th Avenue, 53rd Street-5th Avenue, and 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue) and then goes across the East River to Queens.

If you're going to the East Side, then you can transfer from the 6 local train to the 4 or 5 express trains at 14th Street-Union Square. The 4 and 5 stop at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, 14th Street-Union Square, 42nd Street-Grand Central, 59th Street, 86th Street, and 125th Street.

It depends where on Canal Street you're going to. The Gershwin Theatre is at 222 West 51st Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway. You can walk half a block east to Broadway, and one block south to 50th Street, and take the Downtown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 50th Street (at Broadway) to Canal Street (at Varick Street). This is the westernmost stop on Canal Street.

Or, you can walk half a block west to 8th Avenue, then one block south to 50th Street, and get the Downtown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 50th Street (at 8th Avenue) to Canal Street (at 6th Avenue). This stop is still on the west side of Manhattan, but further east than the Canal Street Station on the 1 train.

Or, you can walk one and a half blocks east to 7th Avenue, and two blocks south to 49th Street, and take the Downtown N, R or Q (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) from 49th Street (at 7th Avenue) to Canal Street (at Broadway). This is roughly in the center of Manhattan.
