The appendix is part of the digestive system. It is located where the small intestine and large intestine connect. It hangs off of the large intestine.
However appendicitis is much more complicated then simply affecting the system to which it is attached. When the appendix becomes infected this causes inflammation and swelling. The swelling can cause the appendix to burst. If this occurs, the micro organisms (usually bacteria) are released into the abdominal cavity. The infection can then easily spread to the rest of the body especially once it enters the blood stream. Infection of the blood is known as sepsis and sepsis can quickly get out of control leading to septic shock and death.
