What tactics did Julius Caesar use?

There were many things Julius Caesar used prior to his conquest of Rome. Perhaps the most effective involved his march to Rome from Gaul at the head of his conquering army. By the time he got close to the city, most considered his success to be inevitable.

Vercingetorix had retreated to the fortified city of Alesia in hopes to wait for reinforcements against Julius Caesar. Caesar had his troops build trenches and walls facing both toward Alesia and the direction of Vercingetorix's reinforcements, so that when they arrived they were cut off from Alesia, and Vercingetorix was cut off from them. Caeser fought off Vercingetorix's reinforcements, and forced Verciengetorix to retreat back into Alesia when he exited the city to try and reach his reinforcements.

Caesar then waited, and starved the inhabitants of Alesia. After running out of food, Vercingetorix surrendered, so that this troops could receive food.

In 61 he obtained the province of Hispania Ulterior and on his return he was elected consul. Next obtained the province of Gallia Cisalpina, Gallia Transalphina, and Illyricum; passing into Gaul for 9 years he had campaigns by which he completed the conquest West to Rome.
