We'd probably use the term 1 gigayear to mean 1 billion years (in the U.S.). The prefix "giga" means 1,000,000,000 or, if you prefer, 106 units of something. The gigayear is a billion years, just the the gigaHertz is a billion Hertz (or cycles per second). Also note that we use a "big" G to represent giga. A Gyear is a gigayear or a billion years.

What is the diameter of Betelgeuse in light years?

Diameters of stars are not usually expressed in light-years. The term "light-year" is used for much larger distances. Its diameter is somewhere around a thousand times the diameter of our Sun, so that would be about 1.4 billion kilometers. Of course, you can convert that to light-years if you like.

How many hours each eon takes up on our 12-hour clock?

An eon is not a precise term: it refers to a very long period of time. Some consider an eon to be a billion years. That is 8,766 billion hours.

Approximately how long ago is the big bang thought to have occurred?

The question is fun, and it would be fun to calculate. But the answer would have no meaning at all, because the question suggests a level of precision that the answer can't possibly have. We would have to be able to accurately identify the time of the event to at least the nearest second, which is impossible. Also, any estimate of the number of seconds would not be reported to that degree of accuracy, so converting back to the units you started with would be called for. Not only can we get no closer than billions of years, we are not even certain beyond doubt that it happened. The question is a little like asking 'How many cubic centimeters of water are there on Earth?' We cannot know the answer to the level of accuracy that 'cubic centimeter' suggests. I think about 473,040,000,000,000,000 seconds. Multiply 15 billion years by 365, then 24, then 60, then 60 again and you'll have it.

What do astronomers mean when they use the term observable universe?

That portion of the universe from which light from distant objects can reach us which has been traveling since it was possible for light to travel through the universe (about 380,000 years after the Big Bang) This is a sphere centered on Earth extending 46.6 billion light years in all directions. That sphere gets slightly bigger every day. Note also that even though the universe is 13.798 billion years old the observable universe is larger becuase the universe has been expanding during that 13.798 billion years.

How many months are in an eon?

In common usage, an eon is an indefinite period of time. If it could be quantified, it would be in terms of centuries, not months. As a specific geologic term, it is equal to a billion years, which is 12 billion months.

How long ago did the evolution start?

If by "evolution" you mean "biological evolution," and if by that term you mean "changes in which living creatures exist on our planet," that began almost as soon as the first objects that can be considered to have "life" appeared here. The Late Heavy Bombardment of about 3.8 billion years ago would (most likely) have made any life here impossible to continue, but bacteria (a fairly advanced form of life) seems most likely to have been here between about 3.5 and 3.0 billion years ago. So some point between 3.8 and 3.0 billion years ago. Give or take a couple weeks.

How old is the big bang theory?

Georges Lemaître proposed the universe's expansion from a single point in 1927. His calculations were supported by Edwin Hubble's observations in 1929. Fred Hoyle (an opponent) coined the term "Big Bang" in 1949. The event itself is estimated to have occurred 13.73 billion years ago.
