Gaius Julius Caesar is most famous for his conquest of Gaul, modern France.

Recent estimations by archaeologists show that the population of Gaul before Caesar invaded was around six million people. In the years after the invasion the population is estimated to be around two million, a decrease of four million people.

Most of these people were probably taken as slaves by the Romans, others were killed or possibly died from famine or disease following the conquest. Others may have fled the Roman expansion into Britania.
