Angel Gabriel brought the commandments of Allah/The God. And the first command was "Read" and the answer was "I am not a reader/I cannot read". Then again the same thing. At third time, angel Gabriel said "Read, in the name of your Lord who created...." And then Prophet Muhammad PBUH understood that "Read" means repeat what I say. And then other commandments. For more commandments that Angel Gabriel brought to Muhammad PBUH from Allah/The God read the Qur'an...
And by the way, Prophet Muhammad PBUH was an illiterate, so He wasn't able to write. This means that He wasn't commanded to write the Qur'an....
