Basically the Domesday Book is a tax collectors' ledger. It gives information on who owns certain land, who used to own it, how much is cultivated, how many people work the land, how much it was worth before 1066 and how much in 1086.

Example:

In Barugh, Anbjorn had 3 carucates of land taxable where 2 ploughs are possible. Now the same man has it from Ilbert.

He has there 1/2 plough; and 3 villagers and 2 smallholdings with 2 ploughs.

Value before 1066 20s; now 10s.
