The sound "umm" (also um, hmm, and er) is a "filled pause", a special class of interjection.
The interjection "umm" can have several meanings, chiefly a noncommital sound when considering a reply, to indicate to the asker that you intend to speak. It can also be used to express doubt, without openly saying "I think that's completely wrong."
Most people use "umm" in the first way, as a way of showing that they are thinking about (mulling over, considering) a reply or answer. Mental processes can be complex, and if another person has a second question or comment, it could confuse the response to the first.

∙ 11y agoA long-drawn-out hum. It could be a person who is unsure what to answer: "You want to know if you're adopted? Ummmmmmm, maybe you should ask your mother." Or it could be an expression of anticipation or appreciation of a sensual delight, especially a delicious food: "Seafood lasagne? Ummmmmmm, that's my absolute favourite!"
