Both adult females and males of the species hiss by forcing air through spiracles, or pores by which breathing takes place on the cockroach's abdomen. It can be quite a daunting experience to see the 2-3 inch/5-7.6 centimeter mature hissing cockroach put on such a noisy spectacle.
