The Azide Modification of the Winkler Method is the standard test for dissolved oxygen. It uses a buret and 0.025 N sodium thiosulfate. The standard APHA reagents in solution form also are available. In the analysis, manganous ion reacts with the dissolved oxygen present in the alkaline solution to form a manganese (IV) oxide hydroxide flocculent. Azide is added at this time to suppress interference from any nitrite present which would react with the iodide. The solution is then acidified and the manganese (IV) floc is reduced by iodide to produce free iodine as I3- in proportion to the oxygen concentration. The liberated iodine is then titrated to the starch-iodide end point.

Which type of titration is winkler's method?

Winkler's method is a type of iodometric titration used to measure dissolved oxygen in water samples. It involves oxidizing the dissolved oxygen to form iodide ions, which are then titrated with a standard iodine solution to determine the oxygen concentration.

What are the steps of the winkler method in order?

Sample collection and preservation: Collect a water sample and preserve it with metal ions to prevent further oxidation of dissolved oxygen. Titration: Add reagents like iodide, manganese sulfate, and sulfuric acid to the water sample to oxidize the dissolved oxygen. Endpoint detection: Add a starch indicator to the sample, which turns blue upon the consumption of dissolved oxygen. Calculation: Calculate the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water sample based on the volume of titrant used in the titration.

Why use starch solution in winkler method?

Starch solution is used in the Winkler method to act as an indicator for the presence of oxygen. When titrating the sample with iodine, the starch solution forms a blue-black complex with the iodine in the presence of oxygen, providing a visual endpoint for the titration. This helps to accurately determine the amount of dissolved oxygen in the sample.
