Turtles need food, water, shelter, heat and proper lighting. You can take them out of the warmth for a while to play or something but for the most part they need to be in heat. To do this you should keep a special heat lamp made just for reptiles on top of it's cage.
Turtles need UVA and UVB light in order to properly digest their food and stay healthy.

Due to the fact they get big,many people keep them in totes.large wood chips, big food bowl,large water area.But for a healthier and happier living tortoise, a glass aquariam is required.Water should be limited because if they fall in the would drown because they very slow.

Infact, All tortoise types to not need another tortoise for company. You can though. But dont be suprised if they get into a fight :)
