A time of fasting is to remember what Christ did for us in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights, he made a sacrafice and resisted tempatation for us. If you are a religious person and want to please your Lord then fasting is far from a waste of time. But if you don't want to give up food by fasting, perhaps there is something else you usually do that you don't mind giving up for Lent.
Pilgrims performing Haj do not fast on the day of Arafat. It is beneficial for rest of the Muslims to fast on this day and you break your fast after sunset
