It was popular since its invention at the XV (15th) century, because it was the first keyboarded instrument, and was regarded as a superior, upper class instrument. However it slowly got less popular with the appearance of the piano in the early XVIII (18th) century.
The harpsichord fell out of favour at the end of the 18th century after the invention of the piano. By 1800 it was almost completely gone and no new compositions were being made for the instrument.
Harpsichords were very popular before the piano was invented. The piano took its place when it was introduced. Harpsichords are still used today though.
