Pour lots of distilled water on the spill to dilute the solution to a lower concentration so that it is safe to wipe up.

The above statement depends on the substance that was spilled but I'm assuming because this was posted in "Science" your probably a high school student and wont be dealing with anything to dangerous, so dilution is the way to go.
