If iTunes doesnt show the iPod there isn't a lot that you can do with putting music on it. The only way to put music on it and listen to it is that you use iTunes.

An iPod will either work on a Mac or PC. Once you have plugged in your ipod to one of those computers i.e., a mac first, it will not be recognize by a PC and vice versa.
this have happened to me, try restarting you computer with the ipod plugged in if that doesnt make the trick reinstalling itunes always does
