Depending on your version of Windows, MSCONFIG is one utility that Windows supplies to control the startup environment.
However, while easy and more convenient to use than manually configuring each of your programs, MSCONFIG is not the program of choice to control the startup environment.
It is a short term fix for controlling whether or not a program loads during startup.
The arrogance of programmers to presume everyone wants everything to load during startup makes configuring many programs difficult.
But working within the programs to control their startup behavior is preferable to using MSCONFIG.
Whenever possible, when installing a program, rather than using the default, choose the Advanced installation method and control where and when your program installs/ loads.
