I am on the second year of my primary teacher training course - I will graduate and start work next summer. This is what I have done to get here: For my GCSEs, which took two years, I got 2 A*s, 5 As, 4 Bs and a C. I got a B in maths, an A* for English language and an AA for science. This is important - you need at least a C at either GCSE / O-level in these subjects to teach. You also need to be capable with computers. Then I took 3 A-levels and general studies and got 2 Bs and 2 Cs, which was more than enough UCAS points. Mature students can do an access course instead. Whilst I did my A-levels I helped once a week at a local school for several months. I applied to three out of a maximum of six universities. They did CRB checks to make sure I had no criminal history and they all interviewed me. One also made us do tests. Once at university you learn how to teach all the subjects: maths, english, science, ICT, PE, history, geography, RE, art, music, languages, drama... you will need to feel reasonably confident with all of these subjects. You also learn theory about teaching and children; class management; child development; behaviour management; special needs, etc. And you spend about 10 weeks each year in school. You have to write essays which are graded and you will be assessed on your teaching in school. In the final year (next year) I will also have to complete a dissertation. There are also tests in English and Maths to gain QTS - Qualified Teacher Status. Once you graduate there is great competition for jobs. As well as the interview they will look at your reports from schools you taught in through the course and they will watch you teach. Once you get a job you are then monitored for the first year before you are fully qualified. Some of the courses are three years, some four. Mine is a three year course called BA (bachelor of arts) primary education (age) 5-11 with QTS (qualified teacher status). I am actually doing two qualifications - a BA and QTS. It is very challenging and takes a long time. You need a lot of personal qualities as well as confidence with all the subjects. It's well worth it though!

To teach in the UK there are a number of different pathways into teaching. All teachers are required to have a minimum of a C at GCSE in English and Maths. All teachers are also required to have undertaken functional skills tests in ICT, English and Maths.

The most popular route into teaching is to have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject followed by a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education).
