As far as I know Adolf did not divide Germany into two - if anything he tried to expand Germany (through the concept of: 'lebens raum' - Living area) and annexed other areas of Europe (those areas that where taken from Germany as a result of the loss of World War I and other reasons - hence World War II ensued. The Allies of World War II - the US, Britain, France & the (then) Soviet Union divided Germany into East & West (Berlin, the Capital City) was equally divided into the Eastern (Soviet) and Western (US, Britain, France) zone. Germany eventually (Oct 3, 1990) was (re)united and its Capital City once more is now Berlin (it was Bonn during the division and for a few years after).
It didn't only take place in France. There was just as much fighting in Russia, Africa, the Middle East and at sea. Now, the question becomes WHY was there fighting in France. The answer is quite simple. Germany invaded France and France didn't want to be taken over, so the only thing they could do was fight.

When Germany had a pact with Italy, France was their enemy; with the aide of the Germans France was taken over. Things were later resolved after the pact was broken leaving Germany to later stand alone.
Alsace-Lorraine, which had been stripped from France by Germany in 1870, was returned. France took the industrial resources of the Saarland for 15 years. France would be able to make use of territory which had been taken from Germany. France became one of the beneficiaries of massive German reparation payments. Demilitarization of the Rhineland (a region of Germany next to its border with France) meant that France had the advantage if it was attacking Germany or if Germany attempted to attack France. France's safety was assured by the terms of the treaty as Germany would be militarily weak.
They were taken over and the French government wanted a say in the war. However, it was mostly a puppet government (Germany controlled it). It was called Vichy France
