Ribs are called 'flat bones'. As opposed to long, short, and irregular bones, the function of flat bones is to have broad surfaces for protection of organs and attachment of muscles.
Ribs themselves are divided into three categories:
True ribs are the first 7 pairs, connected to the spine. In the front, true ribs connect to the breastbone or sternum by means of coastal cartilage.
The next 3 pairs are false ribs. They are shorter than true ribs and connected to the spine. In the front, false ribs are connected to the lowest true rib.
The last 2 pairs are floating ribs. They are the smallest kind of rib. They are attached to the spine. In the front, floating ribs are not connected to anything.
Males have 12 ribs and females have 13 ribs.
The ribs are the bones that protect your stomach, lungs and heart.
The ribs consists of thin and curved bone's. They are also quite long. Ribs are made of breastbone , spine and ribs.
Ribs are considered flat bones and the cranial bones are considered irregular bones.
