If you mean changing one element into another, like uranium 238 into plutonium 239, which happens in nuclear reactors, the word is 'transmutation'. Otherwise many chemical reactions form new substances, without the elements involved changing, and these would be called 'chemical reactions'.

A Chemical reaction produces a new chemical. there are many types of chemical reactions. when you burn something, it is changed into a new compound. When heat or light is given off by the reaction, it is a good indicator a chemical reaction has taken place. Simple phase shift such as water evaporating is not a chemical reaction.
