when moving west settlers face a lack of food, they were also moving into unfamiliar territory which posed a problem. They didn't know the soil quality so they didn't have a clear chance for food. They crops already growing there were unfamiliar and they didn't know if they were edible or if they were poisonous. Sometimes the people already living there were hostile and some robbers/con men preyed on the new settlers.
