After their major defeat at Stalingrad the German army (the Wermacht) fought a defensive war, they never again (besides the bulge) fought offensively.
This is the overall pattern, one of battle lines moving steadily back toward German borders. However, they remained potent and deadly until the final weeks of the war. They created strong defensive lines and made powerful counter-attacks at unpredictable times. They could not sustain attacks because shortages of ammunition, planes, tanks, trucks, and eventually even food prevented continuing operations. One should never view the German Army as simply retreating back after Stalingrad; the loss of life by the advancing Allies was tremendous and showed the continuing potency of the German forces.
