The two main types of weathering are physical weathering and chemical weathering. Physical weathering involves water, wind and dust scraping away at rocks, while chemical weathering involves chemicals, usually acids, breaking down the rock.
Weathering requires energy (to break up the rock). This energy comes from the Sun in the form of Sunlight (heat). This heat drives the wind and evaporates water causing them to interact so as to do the weathering.

Chemical weathering requires water to speed it up. Since there is little water in the desert, it is a slow process compared to weathering in more humid areas.
