Rick Lyon joined Sesame Street in 1989 he didn't voice any characters per se, but he might have puppeteered some, if you've seen Avenue Q, Rick voices Nicky( who looks like Ernie's older brother),Trekkie Monster (who supposedly is Cookie Monster but looks more like Chewbacca)one of those talking boxes in the song "Purpose", The Newcomer, Ricky, and one of the Bad Idea Bears (the blue one)

Who do you think should perform Ernie when Steve whitmire is unavailable?

Two words...Rick Lyon

What is the difference between avenue q and sesame street?

Sesame Street=Happy, always sending uplifting messages to children, basically Avenue Q for the kids Avenue Q=Thinking life stinks, geared more towards adults Sesame Street=has like a zillion puppet characters Avenue Q=has only eleven i.e. Princeton, Kate Monster, Lucy, Rod, Nicky, Trekkie Monster,Ricky, The Newcomer, The Bad Idea Bears, Mrs. Thistlewhite, and those talking/singing boxes (Rick seriously needs to make more puppets for Q) There are some similarties though, both are funny especially Sesame(when it wants to be!) both are educational, both have human characters and both are in New York

Who should play Ernie when Steve whitmire is unavailable?

I cannot stress this enough, the only logical choice for an alternate Ernie would be Rick Lyon, not that I have anything against John Tartaglia, he's good and all, but Rick is the only other person besides Steve who can pull off a perfect Ernie impression, I mean listen to Nicky from Avenue Q and tell me you don't hear Ernie in there? Since Rick is busy building puppets and whatnot, he could probably just leave Lyon Puppets Inc. for a while and maybe come back to Sesame Street as a back-up performer for Ernie when Steve is sick, wants to spend time with his wife Melissa, or is just hungry and wants a sandwich or something. I could just imagine Steve saying "Rick, I don't want to do Ernie today, here you take him!" to which Rick would probably respond "Thanks Steve" BTW I think Rick's Ernie would probably work well with Eric or Frank's Bert, since it would sound more like Jim, that way the old-school viewers wouldn't complain about Ernie's new voice.
