Colombia was originally named "New Granada" during the Spanish colonial period. The name was used to refer to the region that encompassed present-day Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. In 1819, after gaining independence from Spain, the country became part of the Greater Colombia federation, which included those neighboring countries. It officially adopted the name "Colombia" in 1821, derived from Christopher Columbus's name.
