The broken mirror is the remains of Harry's 'Two Way Mirror' given to him by Sirius Black who had the other one. Sirius only gave Harry the mirror in the fifth book and the details were never explained in the film.
The first time, his parents was the greatest desire of his heart but later, when he was forced to look in by Quirrell, he wanted to get the stone so he could prevent Quirrell from using it to revive Voldemort. Dumbledore said (roughly) 'This mirror shows only our hearts greatest desire' 'Only someone who wanted to get the stone, get it but not use it, could have gotten it.' (note: these are not an exact quote)
