Leonardo and three other young men were arrested on suspicion of sodomy. It is important to say that during the Renaissance times, it was sufficient for a person to anonymously accuse someone (usually by submitting a letter) of a criminal act for that person to be arrested. So, it wasn't uncommon for people to accuse their enemies of a criminal act in order to get revenge.

The year Leonardo was arrested (1476) was also the year when he opened his studio and started working as a Master in his own right. He was successful and there could have been other jealous artists that would have something to gain from taking Leonardo out of the picture. Also, one of the other young men who was accused with Leonardo was the nephew of Lorenzo de Medici, who was for all purposes, the de facto ruler of Florence and had many enemies.

The case was dismissed. Leonardo was never found guilty and was released because there were no substantial proof.

Suspicions that Leonardo may have been a homosexual still persist today. However, it is a question that no one will ever be able to know one way or the other because, other than this accusation that was soon dismissed, there are no further records on the matter.
