Matthew himself tells us that he was a publican, which means a taxman, (not a pub keeper) - Matthew 9:9, 10:3. I would also like to add that being a publican was considered a shameful thing in the culture of the day and for a good reason. So it is noteworthy, that only Matthew reveals that about himself, while Mark and Luke mention Matthew but say nothing about his occupation.
We do not know what Mark's employment was, but we do know that he was not named among the original12 disciples of Jesus, although he certainly was a disciple in the sense of being a follower of Jesus.
