His main job was navigation. After reaching earth orbit, Collins took some star readings to tell mission control exactly where the spacecraft was. Mission Control used his information to tweak the burn that sent Apollo 11 to the moon. After departing earth orbit, Collins separated the Command/Service Modules from the booster and turned around and docked wtih Eagle. On the way to the moon, Collins took similar star sightings to deremine the exact speed and location of the spacecraft. A very small error would have sent the astronauts either into the moon itself or past the moon with no hope of coming back.

Once in lunar orbit, Collins took photographs of scientific interest, mostly scouting future landing sites.

It was Collins who performed the burns to put them into lunar orbit and get them out of lunar orbit. He also took star sitings on the way back to earth.

In addition to all that, he had to be prepared to drop down and rescue Eagle in case the Lunar Module failed to reach lunar orbit.

How many people on each Apollo 11 mission?

There was onlyone Apollo 11 mission. The astronauts aboard Apollo 11 were Neil Armstrong (commander), Buzz Aldrin (lunar module pilot), and Michael Collins (command module pilot). The titles are a bit misleading. The lunar module pilot basic job was tooperate thecomputer during landing. He entered keystrokes into the computer to ask the elevation and relative speed of the lunar module. It was his job togive the commander the information he needed (speed, elevation, fuel, etc.) to land the vehicle so the commander could keep his eyes on the surface below and avoid boulders and craters. The commander did the actual flying (and landing) of the lunar module. He was also in control of the vehicle during launch from Kennedy Space center and the moon. The command module pilot made the turn around maneuver to pick up the lunar module, which was stored in the 3rd stage of the Saturn V during launch. The CMPalso took navigational readings from the stars after achieving earth orbit and enroute to and from the moon.

What was Michael Collins's job in Apollo 11?

Collins was the Command Module Pilot. The CMP was the Command/Service Module systems expert, the one guy who could run the whole thing. The CMP was second in command, and sat in the center couch where he could watch and operate the entire panel. The CMP kept the lights on in orbit while the Commander and Lunar Module Pilot (CDR and LMP) took the Lunar Module to the lunar surface. The same applies to the CMP on Apollos 9-17. The same position existed for the other missions, although the duties weren't quite the same.
