As sad as it is that you don't know, he didn't hire them. Theodor Rosevelt did, but he hired them to begin to explore the new land that was bought from the French, known as the Louisiana Territory.
There goals were to beat then up basically. "foor oouss"-Lewis and Clark
The Lewis and Clark Expedition : Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark .
In January of 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned Capt. Meriwether Lewis (his presidential aide) to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery." After that, the party consisted of nearly 30 with three sergeants, 22 enlisted men, volunteers, interpreters, and Clark's slave.
They needed a translator.

Lewis and Clark hired a French-Canadian fur trapper named Toussaint Charbonneau to serve as their interpreter. Charbonneau's Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, also played a crucial role as an interpreter and guide during the expedition.
Well they hired her husband to translate and they took her along too.
When Lewis and Clark wintered at the present site of Bismarck, North Dakota, there they met Sacagawea and her husband in 1804. Toussaint Charbonneau was interviewed to interpret Hidatsa for the Lewis and Clark expedition, but Lewis and Clark (esp. Clark) were not overly impressed with him. However, Sacagawea his wife spoke Shoshone and Hidatsa, so they hired Charbonneau on November 4, and he and Sacagawea moved into Fort Mandan a week later. Sacagawea was 16 or 17 at this time.
no he did not hire Robert E. Lee
Twenty years before Thomas Jefferson even became president, he had dreamed of exploring the West. In 1783 he had asked William Clark's brother, George, to take on the challenge. By the time the Louisiana Purchase was made in 1803, George Clark was unwilling to go so he asked his secretary of state Meriwether Lewis to do it and he accepted. Lewis left Pittsburgh, PA on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA and met Lt. William Clark weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). Clark had heard of this expedition and offered to join Lewis, and had even gathered a team of men to help. Lewis knew he was very good at handling boats, knew how to shoot, and was capable of surviving in the wilderness. They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery." From Camp Dubois, they sailed down the Ohio River towards St. Louis.
In 1804 Toussaint Charbonneau was interviewed to interpret Hidatsa for the Lewis and Clark expedition, but Lewis and Clark (esp. Clark) were not overly impressed with him. However, Sacagawea spoke Shoshone and Hidatsa, so they hired Charbonneau on November 4, and he and Sacagawea moved into Fort Mandan a week later. He did make several contributions to the success of the expedition. He was helpful when the expedition encountered French trappers from Canada. He served as a cook and his skill in striking a bargain came in handy. ---------------------------------------- Charbonneau, despite Clark's dislike of him, was an excellent trapper and hunter. Also, it wouldn't have been proper for Sacajawea to leave her husband and be left with all those men.
