On April 12, 1961, Gagarin became the first human being in space, making a single orbit of the globe in 1 hour and 48 minutes. The spacecraft was designed by the Soviet rocket scientists Sergey Korolyov (Sergei Korolev) and Kerim Kerimov. The rocket carrying Vostok 1 was launched from the space center at Tyura-Tam (now Baikonur), in the Kazakhstan republic.
