The bomb was originally intended for Germany. However, the European Theater of war had ended before the atom bombs were fully developed and tested. Once Harry S. Truman became president after FDR's death he learned of the Manhattan Project and was told he could use the bombs on Japan to halt the invasion of Japan and end the war. He spent months deliberating over whether or not to use the bombs on Japan. The Japanese Military leaders were being tremendously stubborn. They were soundly defeated but they would not surrender. The Pentagon estimated well over a million people both military and civilian would die if the Allied Forces had to invade and attack mainland Japan. Messages had been sent to Japan requesting their surrender and the description of the unconditional surrender. So Japan knew we would keep it up until they surrendered. Truman chose the bombs over the invasion. The Soviets were in China and ready to invade Japan. The US was not going to allow that. So the rest of the story you know.

The war wouldn't end until Americans landed at Japan and conquered it. This would have cost the lives of many soldiers. To save American lives, the allies gave Japan an opportunity to surrender. When they turned it down, America used the atomic bombs after which Japan did surrender.

Although the popular argument used for the reasoning for dropping the atomic bombs on Japan is stated to be the preservation of life and to end the war sooner. many historians feel the bombs were dropped to impress the up and coming USA enemy (the USSR) with the power of the American military, It was reasoned that potential aggression by Russia would stopped as Russia would understand the message to be:

  • We have atomic weapons and you don't
  • We will use them without warning and without offering a chance to surrender
  • We don't care how may die when we use them as long as they aren't American
  • We have many bombs as you can see from the fact that we dropped two on Japan
