A Penny Farthing bike is a type of bicycle that was popular in the late Victorian era. Its name comes from its resemblance to a penny (a large coin) in front of a farthing (a small coin). The term Penny Farthing was not used until shortly before the turn of the century, likely after the bike had gone out of popular use.
It refers to an old-fashioned bicycle with a very large front wheel (the "penny") and a very small rear wheel (the "farthing"). Such bicycles had their pedals directly attached to the front wheel - they went out of fashion and were replaced by modern bicycles with equal size wheels and a chain-driven rear wheel.

A Penny Farthing was a 19th Century bicycle invented in 1871 by British engineer, James Starley.

A Penny and a Farthing are both coins from the now redundant British predecimal currency system.

The Penny Farthing bicycle was so named for the contrast of the size of the front and back wheels which were likened to a Penny and a Farthing.
The penny farthing was a bicycle with the front wheel being very large and the rear wheel being very small in comparison it was like a penny(big wheel) and a farthing(little wheel)which at that time were both English coins the penny we all know and the farthing being a quarter of a penny Australia also had these coins many years ago.

Just fine, thanks.

Pedals are fixed to the front wheel so whenever the wheel is rotating the pedals will move too. Steering is a bit restricted due to it being done by the wheel that's also driving. Braking is a nrevous affair since the rider being so high and so far forward the bike tends to flip over.

Front wheel is large to get some sort of speed out of the contraption w/o having to pump your legs like crazy.

It was an early type of bicycle with a huge front wheel and a small rear wheel.

It was named after two coins that were used at that time, one(the penny) that was a lot bigger than the other(the farthing). Supposedly someone had said that the bike looked like a small coin chasing a big coin down the street.

A 'penny-farthing' was an early type of bicycle. it had a very large front wheel, a very small rear wheel, and the pedals and cranks had direct drive to the front wheel. Purists frown on the term penny-farthing, preferring either high wheel, high wheeler or ordinary.
