There are four criteria for language. Displacement is the ability for humans to refer and recall events that are not currently happening. Semanticity is relating the word to aspects of the world around. Structure dependence refers to the language as being characterized by a series of symbols that don't resemble any given object. Creativity is the ability to produce and understand an infinite number of novel utterances. Aitchison believed these four criteria for language were particular for the human species, and is what separates humans from other animal species.

Aitchison's criteria for language include arbitrariness (no inherent connection between words and their meanings), productivity (ability to create and understand new words and sentences), displacement (ability to talk about things not in the immediate environment), and duality of patterning (combination of small, meaningless units to create meaningful units).

What is the English plural of creterion?

There is no word in English language spelled "creterion".Perhaps you are referring to "criterion". The word "criterion" means a characteristic or a specific standard, one that must be used when judging or measuring something. Because it is a loan word (we borrowed it from the Greek language, where it means to separate, or to judge something), it has an unusual plural: criteria. Many people incorrectly use "criteria" for both singular and plural, but they shouldn't. In the plural, "criteria" is used like this: What are the criteria for winning the essay contest?

What are the criteria of language?

Language can be characterized by properties such as communicative intention, duality of patterning (use of finite set of elements to create infinite combinations), arbitrariness (lack of inherent relationship between form and meaning), displacement (ability to talk about past, present, and future), and cultural transmission (acquisition through social interaction). These criteria help distinguish human language from other forms of communication.
