Well in the 1930's, it was the times of the Great Depression due to the crash of '29 and the Dust Bowl. Times were tough, the majority of familys were hardly getting along with the little amount of money they had - and many of the men were at war. For African-Americans times were even worse in the southern United States. They were strictly segregated from Caucasian's due to the Jim Crow Laws, and were treated and judged very unfairly.
