What were the historical and social background to the Lord of the Flies?

It takes place in the last century, and is written in the 60s.
I guess, William Golding wrote about the 1st or 2nd world war, but it can be projected on any war. The children are being evacuated from the country (because they are the country's future) but get hit by a bombe or so when it storms.
At the end of the novel, the children "immitate" the adults = war; Jack is a dictator and Ralph a democratic leader.

Lord of the Flies is about a group of British school boys who crash land on an island and slowly turn savage. The main characters are Jack (main antagonist), Ralph (protagonist), Piggy (voice of reason), and Roger (sub-antagonist). The whole book is a metaphor for WWII, which inspired Sir William Golding to write this masterpiece. I highly suggest that you read the book as opposed to looking up the answers. It is an easy read and so amazing.
